Total Solar Eclipse of 2006 March 29
Southeast of Waw an Namus, Libya ليبيا (Great Libyan Jamahiriya)

To observe the 2006 March 29 total solar eclipse, my "Eclipse-City" associates and myself had decided to be at the greatest eclipse point. Following the various recce in 2004 and 2005 and due to the huge complications to bring a group of a few hundred participants by 4WD at the point of greatest eclipse, we chose, at the request of the Libyan authorities, to build a viewing site at Waw an Namus. This camp, located 190 kilometers from the point of greatest eclipse, offers both the longest duration and the best weather conditions. The use of military airplanes and helicopters, being approved by the Libyan authorities, enabled the necessary logistics to build a cozy camp with electricity and hot showers. Moreover an International Symposium on solar Physics and Eclipses will be held inside the camp in partnership with the Sebha University. To read also the science magazine Newton of May 2006 PDF Acrobat Reader file (in italian) or the U.S. Department of State eJournal of October 2006 PDF Acrobat Reader file.
You can download the Lonely Planet Libyan Eclipse 2006 Highlights Pack PDF Acrobat Reader file guide. This document contains information on Libya and the 2006 March 29 total solar eclipse where "Eclipse-City" is mentioned on pages 11 and 22.
You can use this solar eclipse calculator to compute the local circumstances of the eclipse, and the solar eclipse timer notifies the beginning of the various events. A time exposure calculator is there to help you choose your camera settings.
