Stereographic Projection Eclipse Map in PDF Format

The stereographic eclipse map manager provides a quick screen preview and allows you to choose between two sets of maps, and also modify the viewpoint and scale. The color high-resolution PDF file contains a stereographic projection map of the eclipse path using the selected parameters.

The screen preview let you see a synthetic view of what will be saved in the PDF file. Two types of map are available: the first is a stereographic projection full-page map in A4 landsccape format with the eclipse information directly embedded inside the map, while the second map is a bit smaler in size with the same information outside of the map area (see below for two samples).
By default the whole eclipse penumbral area should already fit within the frame. You can then play with the latitude, longitude and zoom level parameters to improve the view before generating the final eclipse map in PDF format. Using the left, down, up and right arrow keys can help you adjust the parameters. Indeed when the latitude or longitude fields have the focus, a left or right arrow keypress will decrease or increase the value by 5 degrees, and a keypress of the down or up arrow keys will do the same but this time by only one degree. When the focus is not on the latitude or longitude fields then the arrow keys act solely on the zoom level: left by -0.1, down by -0.01, up by +0.01 and right by +0.1 unit.
The equal magnitude and maximum eclipse curves are computed and displayed in real-time when asked. However the semi-duration contours are never displayed because they require extremely complex and lengthy computations, up to a couple of minutes. To my knowledge no other software computes directly those last contours, only the USNO was plotting them manually by inverse interpolation in their publications (Astronomical Almanac) until the year 1981. Those curves are of course present in the PDF file.

To create the eclipse map PDF file in the background you just need to click on the Generate PDF button. Once the file is ready you’ll receive a notification. Just after the click on the button you can close the dialog.
