When is it safe to remove filters?

Postby lewiz » Sat Mar 23, 2024 4:00 am

I'm going to be shooting the 2024 eclipse with a Z8 @ 600mm f/8 or possibly 840mm f/9 if I go with the TC.

I'm unclear on when it is safe to remove my solar filter. In deluxe.txt (designed for the D300 DSLR) the filter off message is played a full 43.7s before C2 & the comments on the exposures between filters off and C2 include a mixture of filter on/filter off.

I don't particularly care about capturing the 99% and 45 degree diamond ring so would be happy to remove the filter ~15s before totality to get the good action.

Unlike DSLRs the sensor is always exposed. Is the guidance on when to remove filters different? Is ~15s before C2 safe? What about 45s as per deluxe.txt?
