Help with Sony Cameras

Postby francomeconi » Fri Sep 18, 2020 2:46 am

Hi Xjubier! I'm from Argentina, getting ready for the Dec 14 eclipse down here in patagonia. I downloaded SEM and I've been having a few problems trying it on a Sony A7 and Sony a6300. Browsing through the forum I found a couple of threads with people having problems and I read there's really not much to be done, such bad news!!! However I'd still like to give it a shot, but I'm having a very specific problem, which is that basically the program runs OK, my cameras fire but the pictures don't get saved. I'm testing on a Sony A7 and on a Sony a6300, both get detected by the software and the scripts run fine, some frames get skipped it the script is very fast but I believe that a normal script like the basic one should be able to run. When I saw that the pictures weren't being saved I tried the troubleshooting selecting "Camera/press shutter release" and "Single Exposure with settings", both work ok (single exposure with settings will even set the camera to the right settings), the cameras fire but the images do not get saved on the SD cards. Any idea what could be happening?

Here are the Camera Properties Analysis for both cameras:

Re: Help with Sony Cameras

Sorry, just discovered that SEM creates a folder and saves images straight to hard drive! In any case, is there any way to save the images to the SD card as well?? Just to be safe? Thanks!

Franco, to my knowledge there is no way to do this for your two camera models. This issue is caused by those two Sony camera models for which the firmware provides no option to save the images onto the memory card. I know it sounds crazy but that's a Sony limitation and the fact is Sony only added such an option very recently and as you can imagine only on its newest cameras without providing any firmware updates for the older and limited ones! Moreover even on recent Sony cameras even though you now have the option to save onto the memory card it still at the same time want to save the image on the computer hence slowing down the process which is why I use a trick and have the user set this transfered image to the smallest JPEG one to minimize the lost time. So unless Sony decides to update those camera firmwares I see no solution or workaround.

Sony tethered control implementation is by far the worse of all camera manufacturers, and it's also not documented (true for all camera manufacturers but Nikon). So I had to reverse-engineer Sony's implementation and since I don't own any Sony camera I had to find a way to get access to one for a sufficient time.
I would also like to point out that changing the exposure settings on a Sony camera is slow, thanks to a clunky implementation. I have recently found a way to hopefully make it quicker but this will need to be fully tested and validated on multiple camera models. I hope to have a test version sometimes in October, so would you be ready to test it?

From where in Argentina are you going to observe the eclipse? I'm supposed to fly to San Carlos de Bariloche on December 8th but with the Covid-19 current restrictions nothing is really possible for the time being. Lets hope Argentina will open up its borders to foreigners soon and without any 14-day quarantine!
